Abstract

Bone fractures that have not consolidatedfor more than 6-9 months are very worrisome, since tradicional therapeutic approaches are invasive and have low rates of success. In order to promote and/or accelerate the consolidation, an electromagnetic stimulator capable of producing, through a pair of external coils, pulsating fields at the site of fracture, has been designed and built. This method has been developed for substituting direct electrical stimulation which, in spite of the good results, presents risks of infection because it is invasive. Preliminary clinical results are encouraging, although a rigorous, more extensive clinical trial will have to be conducted in order to demonstrate its efficacy.
