Abstract

ASTM F1586 (ISO 5832-9) stainless steel was developed in order to obtain a greater mechanical strength and corrosion resistance that are reached due to its high nitrogen content and on account of its lower nickel content, and is used as a solution to the release of nickel trace element, which is toxic to the human body. The present work studied the effects of the process variables of coating mechanisms and hydroxyapatite growth by biomimetic method with a previously alkali-thermal treatment on the stainless steels surface, using sodium silicate solution as nucleating agent, and establishing a comparison between two commercial austenitic stainless steels, namely ASTM F138 (ISO 5832-1), generally used in the fabrication of prostheses, and ASTM F1586 (ISO 5832-9) with 0.37% N and a reduced nickel content. All substrates were immersed in an aqueous NaOH solution and after were washed and thermally treated at 600 ºC and submitted to the nucleation step in two distinct conditions: T2 – immersion of the substrates in a sodium silicate, and T3 – immersion of the sub strates in a sodium silicate solution plus SBF. After this nucleation phase, the substrates were immersed in a 1.5 SBF. Both steels present ed interesting superficial characteristics to receive a hydroxyapatite coating and the previous treatment with NaOH and the use of the sodium silicate solution contributed to the formation of this layer.
